IndiGo airlines, one of the low-fare airlines, have posed an important question to the Indian citizens --should they travel the pleasure of air or should they follow the old proven tracks of railways to its destinations. The dilemma is same as the dilemma between choosing between 'India' and 'Bharat'.
On the one hand, IndiGo Airlines represents a growing, progressive and resurgent India, on the other, Indian railways is seen as the vehicle in which ‘Bharat’ moves connecting all those areas which are developed and those which are not so developed. Undoubtedly, Indian rail considering the network of lines across the length and breadth of the country joins the country from one corner to the other; Indigo flights have also tried to join the important centres of the Indian business. At least, where the network of Indigo airlines have reached, it has become one of the trusted and credible vehicle not only for those who mean business but also who belong to middle class and want to leap if not fly.
Although the wait for the moment when every important towns are connected with air network and IndiGo airlines operating on those routes, has got some time to get over, it becomes an important policy decision for the government to liberalise the regulation. If the success history of low air fare airlines like IndiGo airlines in the Europe, North America and Australia is pondered, it is evident that most successful low cost airlines have operated chiefly in an open policy environment both in domestic and international markets. But the scenario in India is somewhat different which acts as dampener for its expansion. On the one hand, the infrastructure required to connect all the remote towns in India is huge, on the other hand, the government has to allow the low fare airlines to operate in a more liberal manner. Indigo airlines is ready with its expansion plans and to connect the country with more than a billion population. The recent addition of routes of Indigo Flights to Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, New Delhi and Vadodra is just an example. With more routes planned for the future, IndiGo airlines would try to join ‘Bharat’ marching ahead from its present role of linking ‘India’.
